CANADA GOOSE EGG OILING Results for 2008 and Requirements for 2009 Hats off to our dedicated volunteers who bravely head off in their small boats to search for Canada Goose nests in the month of April to oil the eggs and keep the number of goslings to a minimum. Last Spring we oiled approximately 206 eggs in 39 nests. The oiling was done in accordance with a Canadian Wildlife Services permit that must be renewed annually. Can you just imagine what our shorelines would be like if each year the numbers of Canada Geese on our waters increased by that number! The GPCA Egg Oiling program has helped our water quality improve. We have received requests for assistance in starting this method of control from our neighbours to the South as well as Six Mile Lake, Honey Harbour, Parry Sound and even as far as Sault Ste. Marie. The permit from Canadian Wildlife Services requires that we have permission from landowners where
nests may be found. The Townships of Severn and Georgian Bay and MNR are contacted for their permission
annually. However, individuals and businesses may give permission for up to five years. Last year we
requested everyone send an email with their renewed permission. Unfortunately, we have received only 72
individual permissions and this does not show good support for the program to CWS. It should
include the following information:
